The Rescue

I really must say that I loved reading this book. The author has an easy, natural style of writing that I found refreshing; the whole way through I was planning to say it sounds as though she were writing to a dear friend. Turns out, I wasn't far off.
The small family rescued a "small" dog, who becomes the focus of their lives for the next year. They lovingly nurture him to bring him to his full potential. Just as their loving patience begins to bear fruit, the author receives the devastating cancer diagnosis. She then relates how important this rescue dog becomes to her while she goes through the treatment stages. It's a very loving story and one you should not pass up.
I especially appreciated how beautifully she wrote about her husband. In these days of open contempt for the men in our lives, she dares to unabashedly praise and love him for all the world to read.
I will admit that the last few chapters and the epilogue were a bit too "sappy" for me, but I think she was right to include them. It's all part of her "journey" and integral to her story. There are more than a few typos and misspellings, as well as some glaring grammatical mistakes, but the distractions are minimal because the story is so compelling.
If you've ever known a breast cancer patient, or have been one yourself, or if you've never been touched by this horrible disease in any way, you should read this story. And if you're a dog lover, you will lap up this book. I say the story has something for everyone. Read it.

I say picture perfect because the author is a graphic designer and, I imagine, it is all "visual" to her. To me, it's about the story - and her written word transforms the whole experience into the "visual". Everyone loves and can relate to a journey with a pet - - the love of many of our lives - but unless you've been unlucky enough to travel down the road to the torture of cancer, the roller coaster of ups and downs, the bittersweet knowledge that the misery you suffer today will bring the reward you will realize later - unless you've traveled down this road - you - and I - have no idea - NO idea - what it is all about. AND why would we want to know? We wouldn't. Until someone we love, someone we've known forever, someone that is invincible has this happen to them. And then - and then - The Rescue becomes the roadmap. The blueprint. The template. Thank you. I hope I never have to travel this road ... but if I do - I know what companion - absent of Poe - I will be bringing with me! Kudos!
