Hi, Hello! My name is Sarah - the writer behind redgregory.com.
↙️
I ask my readers, especially those who are students or life learners, to explore how the following study techniques can be implemented inside Notion. The "wiki" style is my go-to but I'm looking for better angles. Below is a list of study problems from the top of my head and potential solutions - a brainstorm.

My Study Problem/Solution Brainstorm

  • Problem: Preparation for studies. Why am I reading this? What is this for? Process? Protocol? Understand Key Terms? These questions will allow students to visualize purpose. The purpose is important because looking at a long list of study topics can become hard to grasp mentally. Also, these questions prompt a narrowing of the subject matter for efficiency.
  • Solution: Create text properties for above questions.

  • Problem: Resistance to changing habits. Finding learning success and assuming this method is the end-all-be-all - a roadblock for learning growth and experimentation.
  • Solution: Inside a spaced repetition (SRS) database, create a property that asks this question generally ... (success rate). I would assume that already inside a spaced repetition database is a "learned" multi-tag status (ie. "Do Not Understand," "Somewhat Understand," "Satisfactory Understanding..." etc.). Turn these multi-tags into numerical values.
    • Do Not Understand = -1
    • Somewhat Understand = 0
    • Satisfactory Understanding = 1
    • Quick Understanding = 2
  • formula= if(prop("Tags") == "Do Not Understand", -1, if(prop("Tags") == "Somewhat Understand", 0, if(prop("Tags") == "Satisfactory Understanding", 1, if(prop("Tags") == "Quick Understanding", 2, 0))))
  • Next, find the sum of these values per subject using parent/child relation and rollup (essentially, higher the success sum, the better). This can keep track of overall success rate per subject. If a particular study method or subject isn't working, I can keep an eye on this number to see how much and how quickly I am improving - to understand if change is necessary.
SRS Success Rate

  • Problem: Schedule study plan. How to locate priority topics and create a schedule (or reminder) of when to revisit.
  • Solution: Create a formula based on learning status to determine when to revisit the material. I suppose this can be customized to support your own needs. In the example below, I suggest the following:
    • Do Not Understand: revisit today
    • Somewhat Understand: revisit tomorrow
    • Satisfactory Understanding: revisit in three days
    • Quick Understanding: revisit in five days
  • Condition: If the topic is important, revisit today regardless of tag.
  • Formula: if(prop("Important") == true, "⭕️revisit today", if(prop("Tags") == "Do Not Understand", "⭕️revisit today", if(prop("Tags") == "Somewhat Understand", "⭕️revisit tomorrow", if(prop("Tags") == "Satisfactory Understanding", "✅revisit in three days", if(prop("Tags") == "Quick Understanding", "✅revisit in five days", "Tag Empty")))))

A Little Update

Looking back at my newsletter, I noticed that in the beginning I talked about my personal life a bit and I want to get back to that. Takes deep breath A lot has happened.

The Positive

  1. My new dog Elizabeth is finally fully adapted to my apartment and is not a terrified stray anymore. It took a lot of work! She's a sweetheart.
  1. Red Gregory has blown up quite a bit since the beginning of this year. I'm proud to say this little newsletter has reached 80 subscribers!
  1. I lost my job but all is well. I'm starting to receive freelance offers, and general support from you guys has been really uplifting.
  1. I started skateboarding. A.k.a ... I got the urge to pick up a skill that could potentially land me in the hospital during a pandemic. I like living on the edge.
  1. I'm discovering the weird world of data science - it's both overwhelming and fascinating. This is my latest life-learning priority.

The Negative

  1. COVID has really messed with my anxiety. The past month has been especially rough but I'm getting better. I'm starting to feel the fog dissipate slowly, however, my motivation levels are still low.

My Mood This Week

I'm planning to track my mood through the entire year in order to better understand what is making my poor days poor and what I need to do to fix them - hence, the "cause" property.
  • Negative (0/7)
  • Positive (7/7)
